Java applets are run from inside a World Wide Web browser.

The Java interpreter is built into the browser and runs the compiled Java .class file from there. Java applets use graphic and other information that is stored in the browser to keep download time fast and allows the graphics to move smoothly.

Java applets don't allow things like viruses and trojan horses to infect your computer as well. Your secure system files can not be altered or affected by Java applets which has made it more common than Java Applications. For more information on the differences between Java applets and Java Applications, http://www.cesis.lv/learn/Java/ch8.htm.
